Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling, as entry requirements can change with little notice.
The Solomon Islands, a stunning archipelago in the South Pacific, welcomes visitors from around the world with relatively straightforward entry requirements. Most visitors can enter visa-free for short stays, making it an accessible destination for tourism, business, and family visits. The main international gateway is Honiara International Airport (HIR) on Guadalcanal, where all international arrivals undergo immigration and customs processing. Travelers must hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay and possess proof of onward or return travel. Immigration officials may also request evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of your stay and accommodation details. While the entry process is generally smooth, it's important to have all required documentation prepared and easily accessible. The Solomon Islands immigration system prioritizes security while facilitating legitimate travel. Visitors should be prepared to answer basic questions about their trip purpose and duration. Understanding customs regulations, particularly regarding prohibited items and biosecurity measures, will help ensure a hassle-free arrival experience.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Have all documents organized and easily accessible before reaching immigration. This includes passport, arrival card, return ticket confirmation, and accommodation details.
Answer immigration questions clearly and honestly. Inconsistent information can lead to additional questioning and delays.
Check your passport stamp carefully before leaving the immigration counter. Ensure the permitted duration of stay is clearly marked and matches your travel plans.
Keep your departure card safe throughout your stay - you'll need to present it when leaving the country. Many travelers attach it to their passport.
Declare all questionable items to customs. The penalties for non-declaration are more severe than any duties you might pay.
Be patient during peak arrival times when multiple international flights land. The immigration process can take 45-90 minutes during busy periods.
Have some local currency (Solomon Islands Dollars) or USD for immediate expenses, though currency exchange is available at the airport.
If traveling for business, have invitation letters or supporting documentation readily available, even if entering on a visitor permit.

Customs & Duty-Free

Solomon Islands Customs and Excise Division enforces strict regulations to protect the country's economy, environment, and biosecurity. All travelers must comply with duty-free allowances and declare items as required. The country has particularly stringent biosecurity measures due to its unique ecosystem and agricultural sector.

Health Requirements

The Solomon Islands has specific health requirements for entry, primarily focused on preventing the introduction of yellow fever and other communicable diseases. While most travelers from developed countries don't require vaccinations, those arriving from certain regions must show proof of vaccination.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - Required for travelers aged 1 year and older arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, or who have transited for more than 12 hours through an airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Certificate must show vaccination at least 10 days before arrival.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis B - recommended for travelers who may have contact with blood or body fluids
  • Typhoid - recommended for most travelers, especially those visiting smaller cities or rural areas
  • Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) - ensure routine vaccinations are up to date
  • Tetanus-Diphtheria - routine booster recommended
  • Malaria prophylaxis - malaria is present throughout Solomon Islands; consult your doctor about antimalarial medication
  • Japanese Encephalitis - for travelers spending extended periods in rural areas
  • Rabies - for travelers with extensive outdoor activities or animal contact

Health Insurance

Comprehensive travel health insurance is strongly recommended but not mandatory for entry. Medical facilities in Solomon Islands are limited, especially outside Honiara. Your insurance should cover medical evacuation to Australia or New Zealand in case of serious illness or injury, as this can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Ensure your policy covers activities you plan to undertake, including diving or other water sports.

Current Health Requirements: Health entry requirements can change rapidly, particularly regarding COVID-19 and emerging infectious diseases. Check the Solomon Islands Ministry of Health and Medical Services website and your country's travel advisory before departure. As of late 2024, most COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, but requirements may be reinstated. Some countries may require pre-departure testing or vaccination certificates. Always verify current requirements 2-4 weeks before travel and again 72 hours before departure.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport (family passports are not accepted). Minors under 18 traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) authorizing the travel. This letter should include contact information for the parent(s), details of the trip, and be dated. If a child is traveling with only one parent and that parent has sole custody, bring legal documentation proving custody. Adoption papers should be carried if traveling with adopted children. Birth certificates may be requested to prove relationships. Ensure children's passports are valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets to Solomon Islands is complex and requires extensive advance planning (at least 3-6 months). Requirements include: import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before arrival), health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 7 days of departure, microchip identification, and potentially a period of quarantine. Pets must arrive as manifest cargo, not as accompanied baggage. Certain breeds may be restricted. Contact the Biosecurity Division well in advance as requirements are strict and documentation must be precise. Many travelers find it more practical to leave pets at home or in care due to the complexity and cost.

Extended Stays

If you wish to stay beyond your initial visitor permit (typically 30-90 days), you must apply for an extension through the Immigration Division in Honiara before your current permit expires. Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration officials and typically require: valid reason for extension, proof of sufficient funds, confirmed accommodation, valid passport, completed application form, and payment of extension fees (approximately SBD 400-800 depending on duration). Extensions are usually granted in 30-day increments up to a maximum total stay of 6 months in any 12-month period. For stays longer than 6 months, you may need to apply for a different visa category such as a work permit, business visa, or residence permit, which have separate requirements and must often be sponsored by a local entity or employer. Overstaying without authorization can result in fines, detention, deportation, and future entry bans.

Business Travelers

Business visitors can typically enter on a standard visitor permit if conducting short-term business activities such as attending meetings, conferences, or negotiations. However, any work that could be considered employment (paid or unpaid) requires a work permit obtained in advance. Bring supporting documentation including invitation letters from Solomon Islands business contacts, proof of business registration in your home country, and details of your business activities. For extended business stays or employment, your employer or sponsor in Solomon Islands must apply for a work permit on your behalf, which involves Labour Division approval, Immigration Division processing, and can take several months. Investment visas are available for those making significant economic contributions to the country.

Journalists and Media

Journalists, film crews, and media professionals must obtain media accreditation from the Government Communications Unit or relevant ministry before arrival. This applies to both foreign and local media operating in certain areas. Professional camera equipment may require temporary import permits. Filming in some locations (government buildings, military sites, certain cultural areas) requires specific permissions. Apply well in advance of your trip as processing can take several weeks. Failure to obtain proper accreditation can result in denied entry, confiscation of equipment, or deportation.

Cruise Ship Passengers

Cruise ship passengers are typically granted shore passes for the duration of their ship's port call (usually 8-12 hours). You must carry your passport or ship-issued identification and return to the vessel before departure. Immigration processing is often handled collectively through the cruise line, but you may still need to present your passport to authorities. Shore passes do not allow for overnight stays off the ship. If you wish to stay longer in Solomon Islands after your cruise, you must make prior arrangements and will go through standard immigration procedures.
